This Week in Atlanta Soccer History, August 31-September 6

August 31, 1969- The Chiefs end their season on the road with a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Stars. Kaizer Motaung scored twice for Atlanta. Atlanta ended the season in second place in the NASL by one point in the standings. The NASL’s scoring rules (6 points for a win, 3 points for a tie, 0 points for a loss, 1 point for each goal scored up to three per game) allowed Kansas City to edge the Chiefs for the top spot. Atlanta ended the season on an eight game unbeaten streak. Kaizer Motaung was the league’s leading scorer with 16 goals and 4 assists. Motaung and Emment Kapengwe were named to the NASL All-Star First Team.

September 1, 1981- A team owner tells the Atlanta Constitution that the American Soccer League is very interested in putting a team in DeKalb County, calling it a “phenomenal market.” This is less than a week since the Atlanta Chiefs announced that they would not return in 1982.

September 1, 1995- The Ruckus win a shootout after a 2-2 draw on the road against the Colorado Foxes. Lenin Steenkamp scored in the 6th minute, and Michael Araujo sent the game to a shootout with a tying goal in the 73rd minute.

September 1, 1997- The Ruckus lose in their final game at Roswell Stadium 3-2 to the California Jaguars. Marcos Roberto and Adeola Ayegbaroju gave Atlanta the lead before the Jaguars equalized in the 90th minute and then won the game in sudden death extra time on a 104th minute goal by Mark Baena.

September 1, 1999- The Silverbacks win 3-1 on the road against the Tennessee Rhythm. Stilian Shiskov has the first hat trick in Silverbacks’ history.

September 1, 2007- The Silverbacks win 3-1 at home over the Puerto Rico Islanders. Machel Millwood, Warren Ukah, and Anthony Wolfe scored for Atlanta in front of 3,297 fans.

September 2, 1971- The Chiefs open the NASL semifinals at home with a 1-0 win over the New York Cosmos in front of 3,800 fans. Kaizer Motaung scored the goal for Atlanta.

September 2, 1995- Clayton State plays its first varsity women’s soccer match, losing 1-0 at Agnes Scott College.

September 2, 2012- The Silverbacks win 2-0 in Edmonton, Matt Horth scored both goals for Atlanta.

September 3, 1970- Soccer boosters in Atlanta start a petition to save the Atlanta Chiefs as the Atlanta Braves ownership decides to continue the team.

September 3, 1995- The University of Georgia wins its first varsity women’s soccer match 4-0 over Georgia State University in Athens.

September 3, 2011- The Silverbacks win 2-0 over the Puerto Rico Islanders at Silverbacks Park. Matt Horth scored both goals in the first half for Atlanta.

September 4, 1991- The Atlanta Attack announce that they are moving to Kansas City.

September 5, 1971- The Chiefs sweep the Cosmos in the NASL semifinals to advance to the NASL Finals. Henry Largie and Kaizer Motaung scored for Atlanta in the 2-0 win at Yankee Stadium.

September 6, 1998- Atlanta plays its first game as the Silverbacks as it ends the 1998 A-League season with a 3-2 win at home over the US Pro-40 team. Adam Boyer, Stilian Shiskov, and Jacenir Silva scored for Atlanta. Parkview HS graduate Josh Wolff featured for the US Pro-40 squad. 2,482 fans came out to Adams Stadium for the match.
