This Week in Atlanta Soccer History: September 7-13

September 7, 1982- Georgia Generals lose 2-0 at home to the Detroit Express in the first game of the ASL semifinal series at DeKalb Memorial Stadium.

September 7, 1987- Ford and Pele are the title sponsors of the big youth soccer tournament in Atlanta for Labor Day weekend. This is Ford’s first year of sponsorship. 216 teams and over 4000 players participated. Former Chiefs/Generals coach David Chadwick coached his Atlanta Soccer Association U19 team to a championship over Rovers 71.

September 7, 2006- The Silverbacks win 2-0 on the road against the Portland Timbers. Machel Millwood scored twice Atlanta, while Felipe Quintero earned the shutout. 6,163 fans were on hand at Portland’s PGE Park.

September 8, 1966- Phil Woosnam is hired as the first coach of the new Atlanta professional soccer team that will play in the National Professional Soccer League in 1967. “This is a chance for me to put something back into the game… I consider it a challenge.” Woosnam’s salary is estimate at $16,500 per year. Woosnam played the last four seasons with Aston Villa, and will continue to play part-time in Atlanta.

September 9, 1982- The Generals even their semifinal series with the Detroit Express after a 3-2 shootout win in front of 400 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome.

September 10, 1982- The Detroit Express eliminate the Georgia Generals from the American Soccer League semifinals, winning 1-0 in the third and deciding game. Generals player Griff Sims later told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the team had to borrow money from the employer of the mother of one of their player to pay for an extra night’s lodging in Detroit. The game was the final one in franchise history as the Generals folded.

September 10, 1991- The Atlanta Magic and the Atlanta Lightning join the USISL Indoor Soccer League for the 1991-92 season. The Magic went on to win their Southeast Division, with the Lightning finishing in third. The Magic went on to eliminate the Lightning in the playoffs, before losing in the league championship match to the Oklahoma City Warriors.

September 10, 1995- The Atlanta Ruckus clinch an A-League playoff berth in their inaugural season by winning a shootout (after a 0-0 draw) over the Colorado Foxes at Adams Stadium. 2,814 fans were on hand.

September 10, 2005- Fabian Dawkins’ hat trick leads the Silverbacks to a 3-1 win on the road against the Minnesota Thunder.

September 11, 1968- The Atlanta Chiefs draw 1-1 in Cleveland in the first game of the NASL semifinals. Willie McIntosh scored for the Chiefs.

September 11, 2001- The Atlanta Silverbacks playoff match in San Diego is rescheduled. The team was on a flight to San Diego on the morning of September 11th. When the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington happened, the flight was diverted to Dallas. The team returned to Atlanta rather than going on to San Diego.

September 12, 1968- Bill Bartholomay, chairman of the Atlanta Braves, tells the Associated Press than the Chiefs have lost $700,000 during the 1967-68 seasons.

September 12, 1971- Atlanta Chiefs win 2-1 in the first game of the NASL finals at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium over the Dallas Tornado. Uriel De Vega scored in regulation, and Kaizer Motaung scored in the third overtime period to win the game for Atlanta.
