This Week in Atlanta Soccer History: September 14-20

September 14- 1968- The Atlanta Chiefs advance to the North American Soccer League championship with a 2-1 win over the Cleveland Stokers at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Kaizer Motaung and Peter McParland scored the Atlanta goals.

September 14, 1995- The Atlanta Ruckus win Game 1 of the A-League semifinal series with the Montreal Impact at Adams Stadium. Montreal took the lead in the 70th minute on a Lloyd Barker goal, Lenin Steenkamp scored for Atlanta one minute later. Atlanta won the shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation.

September 14, 2013- Ruben Luna and Danny Barrera score goals to lead the Atlanta Silverbacks to a 2-1 home win over the San Antonio Scorpions.

September 15, 1971- The Chiefs lose Game 2 of the North American Soccer League finals series 4-1 in Dallas against the Tornado. Henry Largie scored the lone Atlanta goal.

September 16, 2007- The Silverbacks draw 1-1 in Rochester against the Rhinos and advance 3-2 on aggregate to the USL First Division semifinals to face the Portland Timbers.

September 17, 1911- A group of Englishmen who had played soccer before moving to Atlanta hold a meeting to organize the sport in the city. The Atlanta Georgian & News reported that if others were interested in joining the group, they should contact C.P. Smith at the Candler Building, Suite 1033.

September 18, 1970- Dick Cecil, president of the Atlanta Chiefs, announces that the team will return in 1971.

September 19, 1971- The Dallas Tornado win the North American Soccer League championship at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, winning Game 3 of the championship series 2-0. Video highlights below:

September 19, 2001- Thiago Martins scores twice to lead the San Diego Flash to a 2-0 win at home in the first leg of their A-League playoff series with the Atlanta Silverbacks in front of 370 fans.

September 20, 1995- In a huge upset, the Atlanta Ruckus win Game 3 of the A-League semifinal series against the Montreal Impact and advance to the championship series against the Seattle Sounders. Montreal had the best regular season record in the league, while Atlanta barely qualified for the playoffs. The game finished 0-0 in regulation, Atlanta won the shootout to advance.
